Pope’s Grotto Preservation Trust
Monty Don is a Patron of the Pope’s Grotto Preservation Trust, a Charitable Trust created to preserve the last remaining part of Alexander Pope’s villa, which he built in 1720 on the banks of the Thames at Twickenham. Alexander Pope’s Grotto is a remaining icon of one of Twickenham’s most celebrated residents, and acts as a reminder of English culture, literature and garden design in the 18th century. In its time, the Grotto was an object both of admiration and envy, inspiring imitation throughout England. Even today, in its shabby condition, it draws students and enthusiasts from all over the world.
Bees for Development
Monty Don is a Patron of Bees for Development, a specialist international beekeeping organisation which promotes sustainable beekeeping to combat poverty and to build sustainable, resilient livelihoods. BfD supports beekeepers in the Cameroon, the Caribbean, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kyrgyzstan, Uganda, Zanzibar and in the UK to maintain environments that are good for bees, for biodiversity, and for people.
Andy Payne
Monty Don, and the rest of the Gardeners’ World team, have all been jointly fundraising in memory of Andy Payne, a much-loved husband, father, keen cricketer and long-standing cameraman on Gardeners’ World, who sadly died of leukaemia in 2016, aged just 55.
Andy was looked after by Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the base for world-class scientists and clinicians who battle against blood cancer. Alongside QEH’s own million-pound cancer fundraising appeal, Andy’s friends have already raised £40,000 to fund an extra specialist nurse in Andy’s memory to administer ongoing vital cancer research at QEH. Their initial appeal raised just over £20,000, and their fundraising efforts are continuing. If you would like to contribute, all amounts would be warmly welcomed. Thank you.
